First Show (Halter)

First show Bailey's ever been in, and the first show I've entered with any horse.  


Bailey shook his head, nervous about the ring he was about to enter. Emily gripped his lead rope tightly in one hand, and led him into the ring once the gate was opened. She urged him into a medium-paced tort, which the colt happily agreed. He nearly tripped over his own feet at one point, but quickly re-claimed his balance. Emily stopped him behind another foal, a thoroughbred-like colt. The other horse turned his head around and nickered playfully at Bailey, who lifted his gaze to meet the other colt's eyes. Emily snapped her fingers lightly in front of Bailey's face, and he payed attention to them instead of the other horse. The boy who was handling the thoroughbred foal was struggling to keep him still, and when the judge came to look at him, the colt whinnied and stepped forward to greet her. 


When it was Bailey's turn, he looked at the judge in interest, perking his ears. He did not turn his head like the other horse, to Emily's relief. Bailey simply let the judge look at him. Once she went to look at the others, he sighed and lowered his gaze to the floor. Emily then watched as the other horses were led around the ring in a trot, until it was their turn again. Bailey responded well to her commands, trotting almost immediately after he was asked. The colt was doing a nice medium paced trot, and he did not trip this time around. The judge ordered them to walk, and Emily stopped jogging, which made Bailey stop and go into a fast walk. She pulled him back slightly, and he went back to a normal pace. Once they circled the ring, they lined up again and waited for the results. The judge spoke into her microphone. "And first place goes to..."
